The GHT Companies praise new research showing Vitamin D can combat memory loss in the elderly

Study shows significant cognitive decline for people with insufficient vitamin D

VISTA, Calif. –October 05, 2015–

The GHT Companies (GHT), a pioneering Nutraceuticals group, is excited about new research showing that older people should consider taking a vitamin D supplement to combat memory loss.

The study, conducted by the UC Davis Alzheimer’s Disease Center and Rutgers University, followed more than 400 men and women with a mean age of 76 over a five-year period.

Individuals whose blood showed they were deficient in vitamin D experienced cognitive declines that were two-to-three times faster than those with sufficient vitamin D, according to the study published online in JAMA Neurology, a JAMA Network journal.

Joshua Miller, professor and chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Rutgers, said, “Independent of race or ethnicity, baseline cognitive abilities and a host of other risk factors, vitamin D insufficiency was associated with significantly faster declines in both episodic memory and executive function performance.”

“This work, and that of others, suggests that there is enough evidence to recommend that people in their 60s and older discuss taking a daily vitamin D supplement with their physicians.”

Charles DeCarli, director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Center, said, “We expected to see declines in individuals with low vitamin D status. What was unexpected was how profoundly and rapidly [low vitamin D] impacts cognition.”

The researchers said their findings highlight the need to recognize vitamin D deficiency in older people especially groups such as African-Americans and Hispanics, who are at high risk because they are less able to absorb the nutrient from sunshine. For them, low vitamin D should be considered a risk factor for dementia, they said.

Jim Rex, President and CEO of The GHT Companies, which holds the exclusive rights to the only vegan vitamin D3 raw ingredient output in North America, said, “This is extremely valuable research which adds to the wealth of evidence supporting the health benefits of vitamin D. Our Companies will continue to identify similar research results, and promote the use of supplemental Vitamin D3, which is the most bioavailable form of Vitamin D.”

Under its Vibrant Nutraceuticals brand, GHT recently launched a unique Vegan Vitamin D3 gummy product which is Non-GMO, Gluten free, Kosher and Halal approved. This Vitamin D3, which is derived from lichen, is the only recognized source of vitamin D3 that uses absolutely no animal products. It comes in three flavors-strawberry, orange and lemon.
